Verizon strike will affect thousands

(08/01/03) THE BRONX - Verizon workers are scheduled to go on strike Saturday at midnight when their contract expires. The strike will affect customers locally, in the mid-Atlantic and throughout the entire northeast.

Workers are asking for a new contract with increased salaries, better health benefits and job security. The workers are accusing Verizon of scaling back on what they currently have in their contracts.

Verizon has already declared a state of emergency on Long Island because there are 6,000 lines currently out of service. The company was trying to get the lines fixed this weekend, but the looming strike may not make that possible.

Verizon customers aren't the only ones who might be impacted by a strike. AT&T and MCI customers might be affected because those companies lease lines from Verizon.
