Co-op City garages closing on Monday
(08/01/03) CO-OP CITY - The closing of the Co-op City parking garages, which was scheduled for Friday, will now take place on Monday. The two-day delay will give the Riverbay Corporation, which manages Co-op City, and the city more time to find a solution to the parking problem.
The closing of garages 1,3,4 and 8 will now be staggered instead of closing all four at the same time. Garages 3 and 8 will close on Monday, while garages 1 and 4 will stay open as long as possible.
Some temporary solutions have already been reached for the parking crisis. A new lot is currently under construction on the Co-op City greenway, which will have parking spaces for 1,500 cars. The Department of Transportation (DOT) will be painting new angled parking lines on Co-op City Boulevard, and all parking rules around Co-op City will be suspended. In addition, Bay Plaza has agreed to give up a dirt lot next to J.C. Penney, which will hold 1,000 cars once the lot is paved.
The Co-op City management company will be placing letters under people's doors and posting letters around the buildings. A meeting will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Dreisser Mall.
