BX kicks off Puerto Rican Day Parade

(08/03/03) THE BRONX - Sunday was a big day for Puerto Ricans in the Bronx as they kicked off the 15th annual Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Organizers say each year the parade gets bigger and better. This year there were over 100 groups marching as well as bands, dance groups, and folk musicians from all over the tri-state area.

Mayor Bloomberg (R-NY) was at the head of the parade, posing for pictures and greeting Bronx residents. Bloomberg was also joined in the parade by Councilman Joel Rivera (D-NY) and Assemblyman Ruben Diaz (D-NY).

The more than 300,000 Puerto Ricans in the Bronx represent the largest Puerto Rican community in the world outside of Puerto Rico itself.
