BX bodega owners get a lesson on safety
(08/04/03) WASHINGTON HEIGHTS - Bodega owners throughout the Bronx got a lesson in how to protect themselves and their stores.
Within in the last 18 months, 200 Bronx bodegas have been robbed, so a training session was held at the bodega association building in Washington Heights. Store owners were told by police that if their store is being robbed they should cooperate and not try to fight back.
Security cameras and emergency panic buttons are being installed in bodegas as part of the city's safe store program. The NYPD is also assigning extra cops to bodegas in high crime areas.
Even with the training and help from police, some Bronx bodega owners say they are still fearful for their safety.
