Fight to keep S. Bronx firehouse open

(08/05/03) HARDING PARK - It's been a little over a month since volunteers at the Aviation Fire Department in the South Bronx were forced out of their building. But, now the volunteers are fighting back and may have found a way to stay for good.

The volunteers have been battling with members of the Harding Park Association over who controls the building. About a month ago, the volunteers were told they must vacate the premises because of unsafe conditions.

Since that time, the volunteers have filed a lawsuit against the association leaving it up to a judge to decide who has claim to the property.

Residents say the Aviation Volunteer Firehouse, which has been in South Bronx since the 1920's, needs to stay because without it, the nearest firehouse is about 12 blocks away in Soundview.
