BX hospital workers may lose benefits

(08/05/03) THE BRONX - Hundreds of employees at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center have just learned that they are in danger of losing their benefits.

The union representing the workers claims the hospital has not paid its portion of the benefit contribution for months and owes millions. If the money is not paid up by the end of August, workers will have their benefits cut.

A hospital representative told News 12 The Bronx, "We are working hard to address any outstanding issues...to ensure that the benefits will continue without interruption."

Some workers say the explanation is just not good enough, especially when some of them depend on benefits for their children. One worker says she has a diabetic son and can't afford to be without coverage.

sorry to interrupt
