BX home offers support to homeless

(08/06/03) TREMONT - As the number of homeless in the Bronx and the city continues to rise, one home is providing not only shelter to the homeless but also support to help people get back on their feet.

The Park Avenue Thorpe Family Residence is a place where people like Shantay Bryan can go and try to make a fresh start. The home offers people a place to stay and provides job training, educational support, and referrals to programs for drug and alcohol abuse.

Bryan says she now has a nice place to live with her son and doesn't have to worry about living paycheck to paycheck thanks to the Thorpe Family Residence.

The director of the home says not all of the city's homeless are as lucky as Bryan and that's why big changes need to be made. He says there needs to be more affordable housing, and buildings need to be maintained better.

Right now there is a waiting list to get into the Thorpe Residence.
