Residents forced out of 158th apartment

(08/06/03) THE BRONX - An apartment building that sits on 158th Street is being condemned. The building was featured in the 2000 film "Finding Forrester," but three years later, it is being declared unlivable by the Department of Housing. Now dozens of residents are being forced to relocate.

After the movie the building was sold to a landlord who could not afford to maintain it. The new owner eventually abandoned the building, leaving his tenants with "rent-free" apartments. Without any maintenance, the building quickly fell into disarray. This week, the city ordered all residents to evacuate immediately, saying the building had a crumbling infrastructure and exposed wires.

While the city has provided evicted tenants with temporary housing, residents are upset. They say the city should have done more to inform them that the building was crumbling. Residents also wanted an opportunity to pay for building improvements.
