Commuter group files petition for appeal

(08/07/03) NEW YORK - The Straphangers Campaign filed a petition seeking permission from the state's highest court to appeal a ruling that allowed the MTA to increase transit fares and tolls on bridges and tunnels.

The commuter group believes the MTA deceived riders about its finances and says if the decision stands it would be a license for government agencies to lie.

A five-judge panel of the New York Appellate Division reversed a lower court ruling on July 15, upholding the MTA fare hikes.

It now costs $2 for city subway and bus fares, and increases ranging from 25 cents to $1 went into effect on nine New York city-area bridges and tunnels.
