Verizon customers waiting for service

(08/08/03) THE BRONX - As Verizon and its workers' union continue to negotiate a new contract, Bronx residents continue to wait for phone line installations.

Almost 80,000 Verizon workers are still on the job for the sixth day without a contract. Both sides are hopeful an agreement can be reached, but union officials say a strike is still possible if talks break down.

Some Bronx residents waiting for service say even though the strike has been temporarily put on hold, they still can't get Verizon to install new lines in their apartments. Customers say that Verizon keeps rescheduling service appointments due to backed up work orders and a shortage of technicians.

A Verizon spokesman tells News 12 The Bronx that the company will look into the cause of the delays.
