Experts say kindergartners not prepared

(08/10/03) THE BRONX - Child education experts say many children are not going into kindergarten with the necessary skills to do well in school.

Knowing the alphabet, recognizing shapes, colors and animals may sound like something children learn in school. But according to education experts, young children should have these skills down before entering preschool.

The organization Scholastic-Early Childhood says school is getting harder, and many children are left behind in the classroom as early as kindergarten.

Many Bronx parents say they do what they can to spend time with their children, despite the fact that many of them are single parents and hold full time jobs.

Scholastic-Early Childhood says they understand it can be difficult for many, but they're asking parents to spend extra time with their children on the weekends or during the week after work.
