Bronx Tennis Classic kicks off

(08/11/03) THE BRONX - It's been a tradition for the past 11 years, and on Monday the Bronx Tennis Classic got underway.

The opening ceremony kicked off in Times Square with the hope of attracting more people to the Bronx when play begins. Tennis pros from all over take part in the weeklong competition, which takes place at Crotona Park.

Admission for the tennis tournament is free except on the day of the finals, which is Sunday. Kids can also take tennis lessons from noon to 3 p.m. each day.

Proceeds from the event go to benefit the Junior Tennis League.
