City moves towards enhanced 911 system
The city has taken a big step towards implementing a wireless 911 system.
Following the deaths of four teens off the coast of City Island, family members headed to Albany to lobby for an enhanced 911 system to be put in place citywide. The families believe if the system had been in place their children may have been saved because a call from one of the teens was never responded to.
So the city has hired communications consulting firm IXP Corporation to help with setting up the wireless 911 system for police dispatchers. Once the system is implemented, police will be able to locate someone no matter where they are.
The company was also awarded a contract to review the FDNY's radio system, which failed during the September 11th attacks.
