BX immigrants beware of scam artists

Immigrants seeking proper work visas or citizenship papers need to beware of fraudulent lawyers.

These scamming lawyers prey on immigrants and often times swindle them out of thousands of dollars. Some people who get taken in the scam end up getting in trouble themselves and even deported.

So before handing over money, immigrants need to be sure with whom they are dealing with. The community group ACORN says there are warning signs. The group says avoid lawyers who do not specialize in immigration law. Also if services are promised to be completed in a short time period for a large fee, it is probably too good to be true.

To find a good attorney, ACORN suggests calling a local community group or church group for a referral. The American Bar Association also has a free referral service.
