Victim helps police catch serial rape suspect in Soundview

Investigators say a 23-year-old woman, who fought off her attacker, helped lead police to an alleged rapist. Authorities now say the man responsible for a string of rapes in the Soundview section is now in their custody.

On Saturday night, police say the 23-year-old woman was approached by a man near Watson and Stratford avenues. He allegedly held her at gunpoint and tried to pull her into a desolate area. Police say the woman screamed and the man ran away. She was then able to flag down a police car, and after a chase the man was caught six blocks away.

Investigators say they linked the man through DNA to three rapes since last April. Police say all the sexual assaults happened in the vicinity of the Morrison-Soundview subway station.
