Man makes a book from Bronx postcards
One Bronx postcard collector has turned his hobby for historical postcards into a book. And he's hoping others will be bitten by the Bronx history bug.
Growing up in the Bronx, Tom Casey collected bottles, arrowheads and caps, then he says he discovered something much more interesting right in his own backyard. Casey began a lifelong hobby, collecting historical postcards of the Bronx.
Casey's love for history and for the borough led to the publication of a book. Working with the Bronx Country Historical Society, he created 'Bronx Views,' a compilation of 24 postcards from his collection. Each portrays a different area and pastime of the Bronx nearly a century ago.
For the past 30 years, casey's been collecting post cards. Today he has more than 4,000, most are from the early 1900's.
Casey says he hopes the book will help to inspire Bronx kids to take an interest, not only in postcards, but also in Bronx history. Each postcard, he says, is a clue into the rich and varied history of the borough.
You can purchase 'Bronx Views' at the Bronx Country Historical Society for $12.
