BX tenants ban together to fight for better living conditions

Tenants at 1030 Woodycrest Ave. say conditions have improved after taking matters into their own hands.

For years, tenants complained to management about the living conditions in their building. According to the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development, the building has 359 violations for things such as rats, lead and mold problems. Even though the HPD is taking the owner to court, the tenants decided to take action themselves. They banned together and made a list of all their demands for management.

The tenants say taking action has made a difference. Resident Mary Gibson says until recently conditions were unbearable. Changes have been made to some of the apartments and the hallways have been redone.
