Parent coordinators prepare for new school year in the Bronx
Come September, parents will have a new resource to help with their child's education.
Full-time parent coordinators will be staffed throughout the Bronx and the city to help get parents more involved in their child's education and to also help parents with any questions or concerns they may have. School officials believe that having someone at the school level working pro-actively with parents will create a welcoming environment and increase academic achievement.
But before the coordinators begin work, they must undergo training. The current trainees are taking part in workshops to address issues like conflict resolution, diversity, special education and student achievement. Some of the trainees say the workshops have provided them with the connections needed to facilitate teamwork.
The Department of Education says the main goal of having the parent coordinators is improving communication with parents.
