Push to cut back on school bus pollution citywide
Lawmakers and private groups are looking to cut back on school bus pollution.
Two years ago, $6 million was made available to city school bus companies by the New York Power Authority to fix emission problems.
Some 5,000 school buses were supposed to be retrofitted, but News 12 The Bronx learned that so far only one company has complied.
Experts say exhaust from school buses sends pollution into the air and then traps it inside the bus, thus contributing to asthma problems.
A public hearing on school bus pollution is set for September 18 at 11 a.m.
