Children clean up the streets of Westchester Square

For the last month, children in Westchester Square have spent their Saturdays cleaning Overing Street. While some local residents have given them money for their efforts, the children say they are cleaning the block to keep it safe.

The children are all part of the New Youth Community Alliance, which has taken an extra step towards beautifying the neighborhood. The group has written letters and petitions to Councilwoman Provenzano and the health commissioner to try to get their backyards cleaned up.

Residents say their properties are overrun by weeds and garbage left by previous owners. They say the unclean backyards are the reason children are forced to play in the street.

The health department has already agreed to inspect the backyards in Westchester Square within the next two weeks.
