Bronx man ships himself to Texas in an air cargo crate to save on airfare

Charles McKinley, 25, shipped himself in a crate so he could see his parents in Texas.

McKinley, who is a shipping clerk and wanted to save money on airfare, began his 1,500 mile journey inside a wooden crate by traveling in a truck. After stopping off at JFK Airport and Newark Airport, he was flown on a cargo plane to Fort Wayne, Indiana before reaching his final destination in Dallas. He was then picked up by a deliveryman and dropped off at his parents' home. When the deliveryman noticed a pair of eyes staring back at him from inside the box he called police.

Federal officials still do not know how McKinley got past airport security. The incident has drawn attention to gaps in cargo airport security.

Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against McKinley.
