Free school breakfast to now be served in all city schools
The Schools Chancellor announced that all city students will receive free breakfast.
Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says breakfast will be made available regardless of economic need as a way to ensure all kids start the day out right.
There will also be changes made to the school lunch program as well. Beginning September 22, the price of a school lunch will go from $1 to $1.50. Students eligible for reduced priced meals will pay the same amount.
Klein says the money made from the increase in the school lunch price will go towards improving schools.
News of the free breakfast and increased lunch price comes as the Department of Education kicks off a campaign to remind parents they need to fill out the proper paperwork to have their child qualify for the reduced lunch price.
