New program to help Bronx straphangers who lose their Metro cards

Bronx and city subway and bus riders who lose their monthly Metro cards will soon be able to get refunds. The new Balance Protection Program will refund commuters who lose or have their Metro cards stolen. The program begins October 1. New York City transit advocates have been pushing for a refund policy, claiming people are not willing to buy the $70 monthly card for fear of losing it. The New York City Straphangers Campaign says that anyone who buys a monthly transit card from a vending machine with a credit card or debit card will be able to show proof of purchase and get a refund. The refund will be pro-rated to the day the Metro-Card was reported stolen. Riders can get up to two replacements a year; replacement cards will cost $5.
