Homeless advocates say Emergency Assistance Unit conditions are deplorable

Homeless advocates say conditions at the Emergency Assistance Unit (EAU) in the Bronx are deplorable. Families from all over the city come to the EAU for placement in temporary shelters or permanent housing. Some families and homeless advocates protested outside the Department of Homeless Services. They say the unit's sanitary conditions are terrible, the placement system is confusing and they feel EAUs should be built in every borough.Representatives from the Department of Homeless Services say they are making efforts to improve conditions. However, they also say, there are no plans to build more EAUs; right now they are focusing on prevention.
