Synagogues in the Riverdale Section on high alert as high holidays near
The New York Police Department announced Thursday its beefing up patrols around synagogues and Jewish neighborhoods during the upcoming high holy days due to the fear of bias attacks.The Riverdale Jewish Center is expecting as many as 2,000 people for services. In addition to the NYPD, the center has hired a its own security and members have volunteered to rove the building.While security has always been an issue for Bronx synagogues, the need for an increased police presence was highlighted in 2000. During the high holidays that year, two Arab teenagers threw a Molotov cocktail into the entryway of the conservative synagogue, Adath Israel. The teens are currently in prison serving time for the attempted firebombing.So as the sun sets next Friday night on Rosh Hashana Eve, Jews across the Bronx will be in temple, and the NYPD will be outside.
