New hotel in West Farms angers area residents

The Howard Johnson hotel chain is coming to an area known for drug use and prostitution. That's got some in the community of West Farms worried.

Construction has started on the old building, which used to be the Alps Hotel. Now a Howard Johnson is moving in, but that doesn't please many in the neighborhood who know why the Alps Hotel closed its doors in the first place.

The Alps Hotel was known as a "hot sheet hotel," which is a hotel with three or more felony arrests in a year's time. Residents say it was a haven for drug use and prostitution. The borough president's task force came in and shut it down. The news of a new chain doesn't sit well with the Borough President's Office or many in the community. They say the area hasn't improved.

The contractor says he's gutted the whole building and the new hotel should open in three weeks to a month The Borough President's Office says they'll be watching and if they see another "hot sheet hotel," they'll come in and shut it down again.
