Water main break floods streets in Washington Heights

A water main break flooded portions of Washington Heights, forcing officials to temporarily close the roads leading to the lower level of the George Washington Bridge Thursday afternoon.The water main broke at 1:19 p.m. near Amsterdam Avenue and 178th Street, near the entrance of the bridge.According to a fire department spokeswoman, several feet of water cascaded down Amsterdam flooding businesses and apartments. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the cleanup and repair of the pipe is expected to take 24 hours. Bus service was affected, but the subways were not. There were no reports of any injuries.
