Mayor and Schools Chancellor announce plan to form 50 new charter schools

The city has plans to form 50 new charter schools in the Bronx and other boroughs.

According to Mayor Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, the new schools will be part of the mission to create 200 new smaller schools. A new non-profit organization called New York Center for Charter Excellence was also formed to support the charter schools. The city plans to use a combination of private donations and city money to fund the new charter schools, which are usually run by parent groups, non-profit groups or other organizations.

The new charter schools will serve grades K-12 and are expected to be up and running within the next five years.
