Children at MS 222 engaged in lockdown, say parents and students

Teachers, parents and students say there is a lockdown in effect Friday at MS 222. Students must stay in their respective classrooms, while teachers rotate from room to room to teach different subjects. Students are allowed, however, to go to the cafeteria for lunch. The MS 222 principal is not calling the situation a lockdown, but he and the Department of Education have confirmed that students are being held in their classrooms. The DOE says a mobile safety task force has been deployed, and is working with the principal and NYPD to resolve some safety concerns. The principal says emergency safety measures are in place because there have been recent disruptive incidents at the school that have taken the focus off learning. He says this time gives officials a chance to investigate the incidents and help return the school back to normal, and that the measures will stay in place as long as it is necessary.
