Number of Bronx and city kids taking advantage of free tutoring is growing

Education officials say the number of kids enrolled in free tutoring has grown.

So far, some 40,000 students have signed up for free tutoring, which is a 33 percent increase from last year. But despite the rise in enrollment, there are still hundreds of thousands of students eligible for the free tutoring program that are not taking advantage.

The Department of Education says even though the deadline to sign up for the program was October 15, it will accept applications indefinitely. Parents are encouraged to call their child's school to get more information about free tutoring.

The free tutoring program is part of the 2001 No Child Left Behind law, which was created to help poor children in failing NYC schools.
