Experts say buying space heaters with safety features is a good idea

With the freezing temperatures arriving to The Bronx this weekend, residents are getting ready to keep their homes warm. If you're in the market for a space heater this winter, experts say to buy one with safety features to help avoid accidents.

Experts say to buy heaters with features like an automatic shut off button that turns off the heater when it's knocked over. Another safety tip is to get a heater with a thermostat. The thermostat will allow you set a desired temperature and when it reaches it, the heater shuts off. If temperatures drop, the heater automatically will turn back on.

The city has heating-regulations your landlord should follow. Indoor temperatures must be at least 68 degrees during the day if it's below 55 degrees outside. Overnight, the indoor temperature must be at 55 degrees if it's below 40 degrees outside. If your landlord is not complying with the rules you can call the city's information number 311.
