Many Bronx residents get a head start on their holiday shopping

(11/09/03) FORDHAM - Many Bronx residents say they do not want to wait until "Black Friday," or the day after Thanksgiving, to start their holiday shopping. This idea is making several Bronx business owners very happy.

Business owners and street vendors say Bronx residents are spending a good deal of their money on toys and cell phones for holiday presents. Clothing items are not selling as well yet; business owners say those sales will depend on the weather. The colder it gets, the more winter clothes they will sell. Residents say they are coming out early to avoid the usual crowds in the stores after Thanksgiving. Some early shoppers say they can even save money by getting a head start on their holiday shopping.

Though many Bronx business owners say they are thrilled with early holiday shoppers, they expect business to pick up even more as the holidays draw closer. According to a report from the national retail association, the most money spent by holiday consumers is on the two weekends before Christmas.
