Bronx organization works to help educate teens on safe sex and birth control
One Bronx organization is working to prevent more teens from becoming just another statistic.
Kindred Spirits is a teen pregnancy prevention program that helps educate kids on safe sex, birth control and the option of abstinence. Joanne LaForest, of Kindred Spirits, says often times when she visits schools to discuss the topic many of the teens get embarrassed. But for many Bronx kids, having people like LaForest come to their school is the only formal sex education they receive.
One student at Walton High School says many of his peers either don't use protection or just believe pregnancy and disease won't happen to them.
While that is part of the problem, health educators say the lack of open sexual communication between parents and kids plus the lack of sex education in school all contribute to the high teen pregnancy rate.
The Bronx has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in New York State.
