One man killed, another critically hurt in train surfing accident in the BX
A 22-year-old Bronx college student was killed while apparently train surfing on the Number 6 train in the Bronx.
According to NYC transit officials, 22-year-old ChristopherLoughrey, of New Jersey, and 21-year-old Brian Hochstetter, of Brooklyn, were trying to train surf on the Number 6 train at the Morrison-Soundview Train Station Friday morning. Hochstetter is in critical condition at Jacobi Medical Center. The two attended school at the State University of New York Maritime College.
The young men were apparently standing on top of the last two cars of the Number 6 train headed northbound when they fell off.
NYC transit officials say train surfing is particularly dangerous and hard to stop because conductors can't always see what's happening outside the train. This is not the first time a fatal accident involving train surfing has happened in the Bronx. A little more than a year ago, an 18-year-old was killed trying a similar stunt.
Transit officials say there are warnings posted on MetroCards and inside trains to remind people of the dangers of train surfing.
