Man arrested in Belgium for 2001 killing of Bronx livery driver

(11/15/03) PELHAM BAY - A man wanted for the April 2001 murder of a Bronx livery driver was arrested at his sister's home in Belgium on Saturday.

Police say Robin Valentin stabbed Jose Gutierrez in the neck after the driver bumped into his motorcycle's muffler over two years ago in the Pelham Bay Section of the Bronx. Gutierrez was an auxiliary police officer who had been driving a cab to pay for his college criminology studies.

Police say Valentin fled to the Dominican Republic the day after the incident, and he eluded law enforcement until his arrest Saturday morning in Belgium. He will be extradited to New York to face charges in the killing of Gutierrez. Cops say it could be anywhere between a month and a year before he returns to the United States.

An anonymous tipster helped police find Valentin. If the suspect is convicted, he or she would be eligible for a $12,000 reward.
