Morrisania residents upset over demolition of their community garden

Morrisania residents watched in anger as bulldozers leveled a decade worth of their work.

The community garden, which is located on 159th Street and Park Avenue, is one of 20 in Morrisania scheduled to close. The garden was once a junkyard, but more than a decade ago senior citizens from a complex across the street cleaned it up and began planting vegetables and flowers.

Residents took a lot of pride in the garden and say what happened is not fair. They believe they should have been given warning before the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development came and bulldozed their garden. They are now calling on Councilman Jose Serrano (D-Bronx) to do something about what happened.

An HPD representative says the seniors were illegally occupying the land. According to the HPD, 10 three-family homes will be built on the site, which was approved by Community Board 3.
