Mayor announces new plan to combat homeless problem in the BX and citywide

Mayor Bloomberg announced a new 10 year plan aimed at preventing homelessness.

Currently the city spends millions each year to provide shelter to more than 38,000 people. That's why the mayor's plan focuses on a 'prevention first, shelter second' approach. He says it is time to look at the causes of homelessness in an effort to prevent the problem.

Part of the plan includes having 30 members from the public, non-profit and business sectors serving on a committee to review ideas.

Bloomberg says the homeless situation is slowly getting better.
