Morris Heights residents say elevator death should have been avoided

Police say a Bronx man is dead after falling seven floors in an elevator shaft Friday night. Cops say 20-year-old Alex Galan was found just after 11:00 laying on top of the elevator at 1889 Sedgwick Avenue in Morris Heights.

According to police, Galan was visiting his cousin and play-fighting in the elevator going to the seventh floor. Galen was accidentally pushed into the elevator doors. The doors opened and he fell to his death.

Residents say the incident could have been avoided if the city did a better job repairing broken elevators. Residents who have lived in the city-owned complex for years say they're constantly dealing with elevator problems. They say they thought things would get better when they were told a 17 percent rent increase will get them a brand new elevator just months ago. The new elevator went up but they say the problems continued.

The elevator is reportedly under investigation by city officials.
