Education department unveils plan to cut nearly 500 maintenance worker jobs

Education officials recently announced a plan to cut 486 maintenance jobs and replace the workers with private contractors.

Department of Education officials say by eliminating the workers, it would save about $20 million, which could be used towards funding repairs at Bronx and city schools. They also say the layoffs are part of an effort to increase productivity.

But union leaders argue that past repair jobs by private contractors have cost three times more than if the union workers had done the job.
