Incidents of violence at two BX schools has parents worried about safety

Some Bronx parents are worried about safety in schools after two incidents this week.

At P.S. 220, a 13-year-old student was arrested Wednesday after firing a prop gun inside the school. Although parents received letters regarding the incident, some say if the student brought a prop gun into school then what was to stop it from being a real gun next time.

Parents are now urged to check their kids' backpacks before they head to school.

Also on Wednesday, a student at Junior High School 142 attacked an eighth-grade teacher.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education says measures are being taken to address safety issues. One step is meeting with the NYPD and United Federation of Teachers on a regular basis. The spokesperson said safety is paramount and that all students, teachers and staff deserve a safe environment.
