Bronx residents without heat urged to call 311

Hundreds of Bronx residents called News 12 The Bronx Friday complaining they were without heat. The first thing one without heat should do is call 311. The call gets the code inspector involved and also reaches out to the owner of the building. The number one cause of most heating problems is boiler malfunction. Sixty percent of city buildings were built before 1947. With older boilers, building owners might be trying to squeeze another year out of the boilers. If residents feel that the owner is turning off the boiler to save money, they should note the times of day there is no heat, and notify 311 of the times.Legal action can be filed against landlords by taking them to housing court. The New York City Housing Preservation and Development Department stresses the fastest and most efficient way to get heat is by calling 311.
