City council found over 30 percent of BX stores they checked sold illegal toy guns

(12/14/03) THE BRONX - City council members are urging Bronx parents not to buy illegal toy guns as gifts this holiday season. The council members warn toy guns can be very dangerous. In the past five years, NYPD officials say there have been dozens of incidents where officers fired at someone with a fake gun that looked real.

City council members conducted a survey recently, and they found that over 30 percent of the Bronx stores in which they checked sell illegal toy guns. Council members are recommending legislation to increase penalties for retailers selling these guns.

Current law requires toy guns to be colored white, bright red, orange, yellow, green, blue pink, purple, or entirely transparent. Toy guns cannot have a laser pointer, and they must have a closed barrel and a brand name displayed.
