City gun program to expand to the BX in an effort to help save lives
A New York City gun program is expanding into The Bronx in hopes that it will save lives. The program will follow in the steps of the Brooklyn Pilot Program. Under the program, one judge would handle all qualifying felony gun possesion cases from arraignment through trial and sentencing. Bronx police precincts would process the felony gun cases and then send them to the new court system. Mayor Bloomberg (R-NY) said since the Brooklyn program began, there have been longer jail sentences and the elimination of straight probation sentences for felons. The Bronx gun court will begin in January and is expected to process about 270 cases a year.
