Bronx and city food outlets urged to help fight hunger

Each day thousands of pounds of food are thrown out according to the NYC Coalition Against Hunger. That's why Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum is calling on the food industry to help fight hunger.

On Tuesday, the public advocate discussed a report that found only 15 percent of NYC food outlets donate food to the hungry. Gotbaum says out of the 22,000 food establishments in NYC, only 3,000 actually donate.

The public advocate wants those in the food industry to give leftovers to organizations that deliver food to those who need it. Members of various organizations say donating is easy.Related LinksFood Donation story: The Food Bank for New York City City Harvest
