Bronx police crack down on drunk driving during New Year's celebrations

(12/31/03) THE BRONX - Police warn residents not drink and drive and urge folks to be safe throughout the New Year's holiday. Cops say there will be checkpoints around the Bronx for the next few days.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead. If they expect to drink, police urge them to take public transportation, a cab, or bring along a designated driver. Cops say people who drive while intoxicated could lose their license and possibly cost other people their lives. Police urge residents to call them if they see someone who appears to be driving drunk.

Highway safety officials say alcohol-related accidents increase significantly during the holidays.
