Bush's plan to overhaul immigration laws could help BX illegal immigrants
President Bush announced a plan to overhaul the nation's immigration laws Wednesday.
Under the president's proposal, undocumented workers in the U.S. could apply for temporary worker status for at least three years. Immigrants across the U.S. and in the Bronx would then be able to receive benefits and could eventually apply for a green card. Illegal immigrants would also be allowed to travel freely between their home countries and the U.S.
Democrats called the plan a political ploy at getting the Hispanic vote come election time. They also felt it offered a false promise of legitimacy for the undocumented workers.
The proposal is expected to have a very difficult time getting through Congress.
