Some residents afraid to use electricity after boiler fire at E. 175th St. building

(01/11/04) EAST 175th STREET - Dozens of Bronx families at 404 East 175th Street say a boiler fire left them without power and heat. They say it took twelve hours for workers to restore electricity.

Some tenants say when power was restored, the landlord gave them electric space heaters. But many residents, wanting to keep warm, say they are scared to use them because smoke comes out of the walls when they are switched on.

The landlord says the electrical system works fine, and the smoke from the walls was from the boiler fire. He says boiler repairs will begin on Monday.
