Elderly Bronx resident dies in apartment fire

Despite the efforts of a neighbor and a building worker, a 96-year-old man died in a Riverdale apartment building fire over the weekend.

A blaze in the kitchen took the life of Eli Blaustein. His 94-year-old wife, Freida, was not injured and is currently staying with family members in Westchester. The two men that came to the couple's rescue were able to extinguish the fire, but Eli was badly burned.

Neighbors say the Blaustein's have a loving family, which frequently came to visit. The couple also had help a few days a week, but on Sunday there was no help.

The couple lived in the high rise building for more than 30 years.
