Anniversary of Amadou Diallo's death brings back painful memories in the BX

Wednesday will mark the five-year anniversary of the day Amadou Diallo was shot 41 times.

The Soundview street where Diallo was killed now bears his name, and a picture of him on a wall reminds residents of what happened. Diallo was shot and killed by four plain-clothes officers in the doorway of his Wheeler Avenue home. The officers were acquitted.

His death brought national attention to race relations between the NYPD and black residents in the Bronx. Five years later, some residents say police are still viewed as the enemies. One resident said as a young black man, he is not viewed as a productive member of society.

Residents plan to hold a prayer vigil Wednesday. Some can't believe it's been five years, saying that it feels just like yesterday Diallo was killed.
