Family dog attacks two young sisters; BX lawmaker works to stop such incidents
(02/07/04) UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - A 3-year-old Bronx girl is still in the hospital with bite wounds to her face one day after her family pet attacked her and her 5-year-old sister. Family members say their three dogs were fighting on Friday at the time one dog attacked 3-year-old Mikailah Barnett and her 5-year-old sister Isianay. Isianay was scratched and bit on her face. She was treated and has been recovering at home.
In all, nine children live in the home. The family says they have had several robbery attempts on their home, and they kept the dogs for protection. The mother says detectives have informed her members of the Bureau of Child Welfare will be investigating the incident.
This is third violent dog attack in the Bronx in less than a year. One local politician is trying to keep these types of incidents from happening at all. Bronx assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. (D-Soundview) has recently been working on tougher laws against owners with dogs that bite. He started this cause ever since a neighbor's dog attacked 3-year-old Elijah Torres in Soundview last October.
